The World Is Waiting For You
So here we are, February 15th, at the premier opening of our favorite reality TV show, The Amazing Race 14. Eleven teams are being transported on U.S. Marine Helicopters to the beginning of the race located at the Joint Forces Training Base, Home of California National Guard and the Army Reserve, in Los Alamitos, California.
The 11 teams are Preston/Jennifer, Mel/Mike, Steve/Linda, Tammy/Victor, Jaime/Cara, Christie/Jodi, Brad/Victoria, Kisha/Jen, Margie/Luke, Mark/Michael, and Amanda/Kris.
Phil explains to the cast members that you have to complete various tasks, and there are pit stops at the end of each leg of the race. There will be 8 pit stops that are elimination points, where you will be eliminated for finishing that leg in last place. The winner of the race will receive 1 million dollars. Then Phil states my favorite line, “The world is waiting for you.”
The teams race to pick-up their luggage and their instructions, and drive away in a rental cars to the airport. They read where they are to take a flight to Switzerland. Two choices, one flight leaves early but arrives late, and one flight leaves late but arrives early. So the teams split up and took both flights.
Arriving in Switzerland, they read where they are to take a train ride. We see breath-taking scenes of the snow caps on the mountain tops, as the train races through the Swiss Alps. They arrive at night and go to a church at Locarno, Switzerland. This is where they sign up to receive their instructions for the next day. Only 4 teams per 15 minute time slots, so this is a make or break moment for the teams.
Having to spend the night, they were shown an area where they could lie down. Hay was put on the ground for them, under a tent roof. There were complaints of mosquitoes everywhere. The Steve/Linda team, who call themselves “Hicks”, couldn’t keep up with the race for the day. We see and hear the husband yelling at his wife, and the wife crying.
At 7:15AM the first teams received instructions from the church, and embarked on a race to the Verzasca Dam for the next clue. There was another sign-up sheet for a “Road Block”. Only one member of each team would perform this task. . . a bunchy jump off of the dam, and when completed, would receive the next clue. We are told this is the 2nd highest jump in the world.
Each team member seemed worried, particularly Jodi who was having a tough time with it. We could see a big bounce up after the initial fall. A camera helmet was on each contestant so we could see, and also hear, what they were experiencing. But hey, for the big prize money, they all got up enough nerve to do this task.
Once done, the teams had to race on, catching a train to find Kleine Rugen Wiese in InterLaken, Switzerland for their next clue. At this point in the race, it seemed like they were all getting close, except for a few late comers.
Their next task was to choose a pair of traditional cheese racks, and climb to the top of a hill. Once at the top, teams had to transport 200 pounds of cheese from an aging shed to the bottom of the hill. When teams finish stacking all 200 pounds of cheese, they were to receive their next clue.
The hill was described as being full of mud and animal poop. The teams slipped a bunch of times coming down the hill. Women could carry one cheese, and men would carry two. But their constant falling and sliding kept the Swiss men who were watching really laughing loudly at the teams. The wooden cheese racks would break up upon falling, so they had to carry or slide the cheese down the hill by hand. The old man came all the way down the hill on his butt. This task took great strength, which the women seemed to be failing at.
After getting through this, the teams then must race to the bus stop and travel to the town of Stechelberg. Once there, they were to listen to a group of singers which leads them to the pit stop.
Margie/Luke was the first team to arrive. Since Luke is hearing impaired (his mother is not), Phil used sign language to tell Luke that they were team number one (I thought that was pretty cool.). They then won a trip to Mexico. Luke “signed” while his mother translated that he just wanted to show people that death people can do this race too!
Tammy/Victor (sister/brother) arrived in 2nd place. Mark/Michael (stuntmen) finished in 3rd place. The last place team was close. We thought the Blondes would loose, but they were able to run quicker to the finish line and beat out the Preston/Jennifer couple (who fought a lot during the race). So Preston/Jennifer became the first team to be eliminated!
